Infrared Sauna Contraindications

Medications: This information is important for individuals who are using prescription drugs. It is recommended to seek advice from a physician or pharmacist regarding possible changes in the drugs' effect when the body is exposed to infrared waves or elevated body temperature. Certain medications may impair the body's natural heat loss mechanisms and increase the risk of heat rash or heat stroke. Over-the-counter drugs, such as antihistamines, may also make the body more prone to heat stroke.

SeniorsAs we age, our ability to maintain core body temperature decreases. This is mainly due to circulatory conditions and decreased sweat gland function. To prevent overheating, it's important to activate the body's natural cooling processes. When using cooling methods with the elderly, it's recommended to operate at a lower temperature and for no more 15 minutes at a time.

Cardiovascular Conditions:  It is important for individuals with cardiovascular conditions or problems, congestive heart failure, impaired coronary circulation, or those taking medications that might affect blood pressure. Prolonged exposure to heat can increase cardiac output and blood flow, which can be dangerous for those with these conditions. It's important exercise caution and take necessary precautions to avoid heat stress.

Alcohol / Alcohol Abuse:  Contrary to popular belief, it is not advisable to attempt to “sweat out” a hangover. Alcohol intoxication decreases a person’s judgment; therefore, he/she may not realize when the body has a negative reaction to high heat. Alcohol also increases the heart rate, which may be further increased by heat stress.

Chronic Conditions:  It is important to note that certain medical conditions and sensitivities may make the use of infrared saunas unsafe.  For example, individuals with multiple sclerosis, nervous system tumors, diabetes, hemophilia, or insensitivity to heat should avoid using infrared saunas. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare before using any new wellness or therapeutic treatments.

Menstruation:  Heating of the low back area during menstruation may lead to a temporary increase in menstrual flow. It is important to be aware of this potential effect when using heat therapy for menstrual cramps.

Joint Injury:  Heating can be a great way to relieve joint pain, but it's important use it correctly. If you have a recent joint injury, it's best to avoid heating the area for the first 48 hours or until the swelling goes down. Additionally, if you have chronically hot and swollen joints, they may not respond to vigorous heating. It's important to listen to your body and use heat therapy in a way that works best for you.

Implants:  Metal pins, rods, artificial joints, or any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and thus are not heated by this system. However, it is always recommended to consult your physician before an infrared sauna to ensure your safety and well-being.

Pacemaker / Defibrillator:  The magnets used to assemble this wooden sauna can interrupt the pacing and inhibit the output of pacemakers. Please discuss with your doctor the possible risks this may cause.
